Beijing station closed to head off June 4 remembrance

Beijing Subway has closed its station at Muxidi ahead of the 25th anniversary of the June 4 crackdown on student protests in Tiananmen Square, Apple Daily reported Monday.

Subway management said it had closed the station since Monday on the orders of the higher authorities. Muxidi was the site of the greatest number of casualties in the crackdown.

The action is part of efforts to forestall commemorations on the mainland for the Tiananmen Square movement and comes after the detention in recent weeks of more than 50 dissidents, including lawyers, reporters, academic as well as artists, the report said.

China University of Political Science and Law has also sent out notices via Facebook and Twitter informing all overseas students at the university that will have to take part in a field trip to Inner Mongolia or the Beijing suburbs.
