China is weighing up whether to relax its “green card” policy to attract more overseas professionals, Xinhua reported Monday.
The authorities could lower the application and approval threshold for permanent residence, making the program “more flexible and pragmatic”, according to the Communist Party Central Committee’s Organizational Department.
Close to 5,000 overseas nationals were granted Chinese green cards between 2004, when the scheme was launched, and 2012, the report said.
The scheme allows foreign passport holders married to Chinese nationals, and overseas nationals who either work as elite talent or invest at least US$500,000, to apply for the green cards.
