HK turns up the heat for dragon boat festival

The heat was on for the Tuen Ng Festival, also known as Dragon Boat Festival, on Monday as the temperature averaged 32.7 degrees Celsius, the highest since the 32.9 degrees Celsius recorded on the festival in 2007, Ming Pao Daily reported Tuesday.

But the hot weather did not deter racers or viewers. As many as 150,000 people attended the Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships. In all 277 teams competed the championships, with entrants from the United States, the Netherlands and Brazil, the report said.

Dragon boat races were also held in other districts around the city, including Shatin, Tai Po and Sai Kung.

Added to China’s third national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2011, the Dragon Boat Water Parade in Tai O also attracted numerous visitors.
