China said it took the correct path for its people when it cracked down on pro-democracy demonstrators around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square a quarter of a century ago, Reuters reported Tuesday.
On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the crackdown, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the central government had long ago reached a conclusion about the political turmoil.
“In the last three decades and more of reform and opening up, China’s enormous achievements in social and economic development have received worldwide attention. The building of democracy and the rule of law have continued to be perfected,” Lei was quoted as saying.
The report said the government has never released a death toll for the crackdown, but human rights groups and witnesses estimate that anywhere from several hundred to several thousand died.
