Problems persist but China nuclear plants ‘generally safe’

China’s nuclear power industry has a relatively good safety record but there are still gaps in oversight, Xinhua reported Wednesday, citing the head of the country’s nuclear watchdog.

The report quoted Li Ganjie, vice minister of environmental protection and head of the National Nuclear Safety Administration, as saying that no serious operational incidents have occurred in the 30 years since China launched its first nuclear power plant.

China has 19 nuclear power plants up and running and 29 units under construction, the report said.

But Li said safety is a challenging task and there are still problems in supervision and the whole nuclear industry.
