Sohu blog boss held after posting Mao send-up

Beijing police are believed to have detained the head of a popular mainland blog site for allegedly creating a disturbance, Beijing lawyer and blogger Liu Xiaoyuan said on his Twitter page Wednesday.

The detention of Zhao Mu, director of Sohu.com’s blog site, comes after he posted a Photoshopped picture on his microblog taking aim at late leader Mao Zedong.

The picture shows several women doing the Loyalty Dance against the backdrop of a banner saying “Chairman Mao is the Quannengshen in our hearts”.

Six followers of the Quannengshen sect have been arrested for allegedly bashing a woman to death in Zhaoyuan, Shandong, several days ago after she refused to give them her phone number.

The banner in the original Cultural Revolution photo says “Chairman Mao is the red sun in our hearts”.

Satirizing the blind worship of Mao, Zhao said “Kneel down! Quannengshen is here!” on his post.

Sing Tao Daily reported Thursday that Zhao, 57, had worked for People’s Daily and Southern Weekly after graduating from Fudan University. He was detained for nearly a year because of his involvement in the 1989 student protests.
