Why it rarely rains on a Disney parade

Wingo Chong is a rainmaker for Hong Kong Disneyland. He helps ensure the success of one of its biggest attractions — the parade of characters.

Figuratively speaking, that is.

Because Chong, in fact, is probably the one person who works the hardest so it does not rain on his parade. That comes with his job as organizer of the daily fantasy procession.

He comes equipped for the daily challenge. Chong has installed all kinds of weather apps on his smartphone and commits a few little details about the weather (such as local knowledge) to memory.

In most cases, he has called the weather right, which means thousands of Disney visitors have come away dry and happy.

“But I can’t be 100 percent accurate,” he told MetroHK.

Of course.

Before Wong joined the theme park in 2005, he had been a dancer for 20 years, appearing with pop stars Aaron Kwok and Jacky Cheung and in various TVB shows.

It’s likely Hong Kong Disney hired him for his dancing skills which come with the ability to organize people, put on a show and demonstrate a sense of timing.

As for his talent to predict the weather, who knows? He will be welcome at the Hong Kong Observatory if he decides to give up Disneyland.

But let’s take it from the guy. “I enjoy the challenge,” he says.
