Robots deployed for safety of World Cup fans

Security is of utmost importance in major sporting events.

In addition to unmanned Israeli drones monitoring the matches and the crowds at the upcoming World Cup games in Brazil, there will also be robots to help deal with dangerous situations, according to England-based blogger artois52.

The 510 PackBot machines, supplied by US advanced technology company iRobot Corp., are designed to navigate rough territory and narrow passages, even climb stairs. Built-in cameras and sensors allow them to detect chemicals, handle suspicious objects, investigate and dispose of bombs.

iRobot said these machines have already been used in over 30 countries.

They are not authorized to play football, however.
