Taiwan’s future must be decided by all Chinese people: Beijing

Taiwan’s future must be decided by all Chinese people rather than by only Taiwan residents, a spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council said on Wednesday.

“Any issue related to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be decided by all Chinese people, including Taiwanese compatriots,” spokeswoman Fan Liqing said at a weekly news briefing, according to state news agency Xinhua.

“Though the Chinese mainland and Taiwan are yet to be reunified, the fact that both belong to one China has never changed, and China’s sovereignty and territory have always been indivisible,” Fan added.

She made the comments following Tainan Mayor William Lai’s remarks on “Taiwan independence”. During a visit to Shanghai, Lai is reported to have said that Taiwan’s future should be decided by its 23 million people. Lai is a member of Taiwan’s independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Fan reiterated Beijing’s “firm and unwavering” opposition to Taiwan independence, and “its clear and consistent policy toward the DPP.”

“We welcome visits by all Taiwanese, regardless of who they are or whatever political ideas they once had, as long as they now favor, support and take part in the peaceful development between the two sides,” she said.

Meanwhile, DPP lawmaker Duan Yi-kang is said to have shouted: “shameless dirt”, when asked by reporters to respond to Fan’s remarks.

“There is no point of asking what DDP thinks of her comments. Instead, everyone should ask how President Ma Ying-jeou and the ruling Kuomintang respond to that,” Duan said on his Facebook page, Apple Daily reported.
