China to deploy more high-speed trains

China Railway Corp. (CRC) has unveiled a new national train operation plan, featuring the deployment of more bullet trains, to boost the capacity of the country’s trunk lines and cargo service, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The revised operation plan, which will take effect from July 1, will raise the number of passenger trains in service to 4,894, of which 2,660 are CRH bullet trains, the report said.

With 121 trains added to the service, the trunk high-speed railways linking the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Harbin, Shijiazhuang and Taiyuan will have greater capacity to move passengers from one city to another, the CRC said.

Apart from offering more high-speed bullet trains, the CRC will also reconfigure other passenger trains to run at faster speeds and equip some ordinary trains with air-conditioning.

The train service operator will operate 118 freight trains across the country, including three trains running at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour between China and Europe.

As of the end of last year, China had a combined railway network of more than 100,000 km, including more than 10,000 km of high-speed tracks, and it plans to increase this to 120,000 km by 2020, Xinhua said.
