The lights are on that People’s Liberation Army (PLA) headquarters in Admiralty, with an illuminated display on the outside of the building showing the organization’s seven Chinese characters, Ming Pao Daily reported Thursday.
The PLA said the display on the 28-story PLA Forces Hong Kong Building is an effort to fit into the urban landscape of downtown Hong Kong.
The outside of the building is being refurbished and the characters are a test run, the PLA said.
Independent political commentator Johnny Lau said the PLA usually made some sort of public display such as military exercises and warship maneuvers in the lead-up to July 1.
Many people in the city have associated the lights with political activities in the city this year, the report said.
