More than 100 applications were lodged Wednesday on the first day of submissions for 85 subsidized Home Ownership Scheme flats in Tai O, Sing Tao Daily reported Thursday.
Most of the applications were from workers in urban areas, despite the remote location of the flats, which are priced between HK$640,000 (US$82,558) and HK$890,000.
Some of the applicants were also parents planning to vacate their downtown homes for their children, the report said. The Housing Authority said it handed out around 12,600 application forms on the first day.
The Tai O flats are about an hour’s bus ride from Tung Chung but one retired applicant said he is confident the government will expedite development on Lantau Island and the transport will improve.
Another applicant said his daughter lived at home and worked in a bank in Kwun Tong. Although it would be a two-hour journey each way for her, the applicant said the low cost of a flat would make up for it, the report said.
