Ex-Dalian goalie dies after heart-stopping Spain-Holland game

The Grim Reaper called full time on Li Mingqiang Saturday morning as the one-time semi-pro soccer player watched the World Cup.

Li, 51, a former semi-professional goalkeeper in Dalian, Liaoning province, suffered a fatal heart attack while watching Holland trounce defending champions Spain 5-1 in the opening game of Group B in Salvador, Brazil.

A friend watching the game with Li told the Dalian Evening News that Li had suffering from severe heart problems for years. “The game was so intense and ended with a surprise … although the doctors were there quickly, it was too late,” the friend said.

In Jiangsu province, a 25-year-old man was found dead in his room Saturday morning with the computer still on. His sudden death is thought to have been linked to staying up late watching Chile play Australia.

Cardiologist Ho Hung-kwong was quoted as saying in a MetroHK report Monday that that men over 40 are at risk of heart problems if they stay up late to watch the matches. The excitement of intense contests increases the output of adrenaline and can trigger a heart attack.

Ho suggested fans make sure they are well enough to stay up to watch the matches.
