Britain’s deputy prime minister has condemned China’s political system and accused the country of systematic abuse of human rights, the Guardian reported Monday ahead of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s three-day visit to the European nation.
Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats, was quoted as saying there are large-scale and systematic human rights abuses in China.
Clegg said China is going through a massive economic transformation but its people “are still politically shackled to … a one-party state communist doctrine which is the antithesis of the kind of open, democratic society that I believe in”, according to the report.
But he said Britain should not sever commercial ties with China because in the long term “commercial prosperity in China, economic transformation in China will lead to an ever increasing pressure for social and political emancipation as well.”
