Explosion at military warehouse kills 17 in Hunan province

Seventeen soldiers were killed in an explosion at a military warehouse in China’s south-central Hunan province earlier this week, according to state news agency Xinhua.

The accident occurred at 4:45 pm on Tuesday in Hengyang city as soldiers were stacking ammunition inside the storage facility, it said.

A witness was quoted as saying that the explosion lasted several minutes.

There were no civilian casualties in the incident. However, some rural residents in the vicinity saw the window panes of their houses get shattered.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion.
