Pre-teen golfer Lucy Li the big draw at US Women’s Open

Sporting pigtails and wearing braces on her teeth, Lucy Li looks like just another pre-teen out to have some fun. But watch her closely as she answers questions from a bevy of reporters at the US Golf Open greens, and it becomes quickly apparent that she is no ordinary girl.

Aged just 11 years, Li is set to be the youngest golfer ever to play in the US Women’s Open that will begin at Pinehurst in North Carolina on June 19.

Born and raised in California by immigrant parents — her father was from mainland China and mother from Hong Kong, Li has been called a wonder girl by the media which follows her every move with great interest, am730 noted Thursday.

The child prodigy won the qualifier held last month in California to join the high-profile championship.

Having been playing golf since 7, Li beats American Lexi Thompson as the youngest competitor in a US Women’s Open. Thompson was 12 when she played in the championship in 2007.

Speaking at a news conference recently, Li said she does not feel nervous about the coming competition and that she just wants to enjoy herself.

Her mother, meanwhile, hopes that Li will play for Hong Kong some time in the future.

If the young sensation indeed does that, Hongkongers will surely give her a rapturous welcome.
