Speculation mounts over Lai’s reported meeting with Wolfowitz

Next Media Ltd. (00282.HK) chairman Jimmy Lai is said to have met Paul Wolfowitz, a former US deputy secretary of defense, last month in Hong Kong, Singtao Daily reported Thursday.

The meeting took place on board Lai’s private yacht, the paper said, citing information gathered by Eastweek magazine. The duo is said to have been together for five hours.

The meeting has sparked off speculation as to what they might have discussed, the report said, noting that it came against the backdrop of a debate in Hong Kong over political reforms.

Wolfowitz was, however, not known to have had any contact previously with pro-democracy activists in the city.

Eastweek’s inquiries on the private meeting did not elicit any reply from Lai, according to the report.

The meeting came at a sensitive time as the Occupy Central protest movement is gearing up for a massive rally on July 1 to call for, among things, reforms related to the chief executive election.

Wolfowitz, currently a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, was scheduled to give a speech on May 21 at a seminar in Washington D.C. but suddenly canceled it. According to Eastweek, the reason for the cancelation was because Wolfowitz was in Hong Kong at that time.
