Great vision wanted

If you think running a toll road business is just about collecting money at the booth, try working in the control room.

I had a chance to visit the main control center of one of Yuexiu Infrastructure’s core assets — the Guangzhou Northern Second Ring Expressway.

Staff there have to keep monitoring the six-lane, 42-kilometer toll road with 79 surveillance cameras around the clock to locate possible dangers, like cars stopping in the middle of the highway and goods accidentally falling out of a truck. Once spotted, the center will dispatch on-site patrol cars to deal with the issue.

When you have a screen the size of a wall, resolution matters a lot. Asked if the company is planning to upgrade to high-definition screens, Yuexiu said it will — but in phases in order to ease the financial burden.

Looks like the control room team has to put up with not-so-fine screenshots for a while, but investors would appreciate a management team that always strives to run a tight ship.
