China automaker plans US ride after ‘Transformers’ windfall

Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. (2238.HK) hopes to capitalize on the publicity surrounding the latest Transformers movie by exporting its sport utility vehicles to the United States.

The Chinese automaker plans to start shipping its SUVs including the Trumpchi GS5 model featured in “Transformers: Age of Extinction” to the US next year, Bloomberg News reported, citing a company executive.

“Our sponsorship of Transformers 4 will help more overseas dealers and consumers know about our cars and over the long run it will greatly contribute to our branding,” Wu Song, head of the Trumpchi brand, was quoted as saying.

“We want to start exporting to the US as quickly as possible and I am confident that they will find our Trumpchi cars competitive,” Wu said.

The Chinese firm had been approached to participate in the fourth installment of the Transformers movie franchise after director Michael Bay saw the Trumpchi E-Jet electric car at an auto show, he said.
