Sai Kung woman held hostage as thieves raid home

Three thieves armed with iron pipes smashed through a glass door and held a woman hostage in her well-secured Sai Kung home Thursday night before making off with more than HK$700,000 (US$90,300) in cash and jewelry, Apple Daily reported Friday, citing police.

The thieves snuck across a waterway and scaled a barbed wire fence to break into the three-story home of lawyer Huen Ho-yin, 52, at around 7pm. They then held Huen’s wife hostage and demanded Huen open the safe, the report said.

The trio fled via a balcony, taking HK$480,000 in jewelry and HK$280,000 cash with them.

The police said the thieves spoke to each other in a mainland dialect and could have been informed about the property.

Villagers said they were worried because the burglars were not afraid to break into the house while the occupants were home.
