A sex tape involving a former GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) executive triggered China’s ongoing bribery investigation into the British pharmaceutical giant.
The company confirmed the existence of a video which shows Mark Reilly, who is separated from his wife, having sex with his Chinese girlfriend in his Shanghai flat, according to The Telegraph.
The secret tape was sent to senior GSK officials, including chief executive Andrew Witty, by unknown sources on March 16 last year in an apparent blackmail, the report said.
GSK authorised Reilly to spend an initial £20,000 (US$34,000) of the company’s money to hire a private investigator to find out the perpetrators of the sting, believed to be part of a wider attempt to expose the drug giant to punitive action by Chinese authorities.
But the investigation failed to establish the source of the material.
Two months later, Chinese authorities launched an investigation into corruption at GSK and arrested Reilly on charges of ordering a massive bribery network that resulted in higher drug prices and illegal revenue of more than US$150 million, the report said.
Reilly stepped down as head of GSK’s China business in July last year.
