Wong Tai Sin flat yields arsenal of guns, ammunition

A 38-year-old man was arrested after illegal guns and ammunition were discovered at his home in Wong Tai Sin on Saturday, Apple Daily reported.

Police said staff at the airport mail center earlier found that a package addressed to the suspect from Arizona in the United States contained bullets. Police then searched his flat and found five guns, 27 air pistols and 9,100 rounds of bullets.

The suspect, identified only as Wong and a manager at a fast-food chain, told police all the guns and ammunition were bought online and delivered to a restaurant in Mong Kok where he works.

He said they were only for his personal collection, and that he had no intention of selling them for profit.

Police are investigating whether the firearms had been used in any crime. And as the man lives with his parents, police are also looking into whether his parents knew about the guns.

Lai Wing-kuen, founding chairman of the Hong Kong Shooters Confederation, said the guns seized from the suspect were very powerful, while the rifles could kill within a shooting range of 50 meters.

The two Ruger 22/45 and STI Edge 45 pistols seized from the suspect are the same models used by special police units in the United States, Lai said.
