Xi urges border, coastal defense bastions

Chinese President Xi Jinping said China’s borders and coastal regions should be bastions of defense and local authorities should work toward that goal.

All officials should improve their awareness of potential dangers to national security, Xi told a meeting on frontier and coastal defense in Beijing Friday, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Xi said it is the government’s duty to preserve territorial integrity and rights to sovereign waters to ensure stability and prosperity.

Meanwhile Qu Xing, president of the China Institute of International Studies in Beijing, said China has the power to protect its territorial integrity and has had a consistent policy on its territorial disputes over maritime rights.

An expert said Xi’s speech showed China treats national security as an equally important issue as economic development.

Premier Li Keqiang and Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli also attended the meeting.
