Power is money in desolate Hebei hinterland

What do you do if your region lays claim to nothing more than a stretch of barren rocks in the middle of nowhere and abundant sunshine?

For a long time the answer in Hebei’s remote Quyang county was not particularly much. Quyang was stuck in low economic gear and its residents scraped by on low incomes for years.

That was until solar energy came along. Then desolate hillsides were transformed into sites for solar power stations. Electricity titans like Huadian and solar energy majors including Yingli have or are in the process of building projects there.

The merits of green energy or saving the world may not be uppermost in the minds of the county’s villagers but they sure would agree that solar energy has saved their economic lives.

Farmers can earn a steady income by renting out land and others can take on work building or helping maintain equipment to harvest the sun. Their spending in turn benefits others in the community.

Hebei Daily reports that such is the economic power of these solar projects that they could lift 50,000 people in the county above the poverty line.
