Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy is under formal investigation over allegations of corruption and influence-peddling linked to another case of alleged secret funding from former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, the Financial Times reported Wednesday.
Sarkozy was the taken into police custody for questioning Tuesday before being released. He denies the allegations.
The influence-peddling probe involves Sarkozy, his lawyer and a judge, the report said, citing news agencies. It stems from phone taps in a separate investigation into claims that Gaddafi poured millions of euros into Sarkozy’s 2007 presidential campaign, allegations Sarkozy also vehemently denies, the report said.
