From a student activist’s father to his son

The head of a student group staging a sit-in as a rehearsal for Occupy Central broke into tears Tuesday night after receiving an email from his father, Ming Pao Daily reported Wednesday.

“Son, please be careful. I don’t want to become ‘Occupy Central Father’ like the Tiananmen Mothers,” the father of Federation of Students secretary general Alex Chow wrote, referring to a group of mostly mothers of the victims of the 1989 crackdown.

Chow got the email during Tuesday’s overnight sit-in in Chater Road and outside the chief executive’s office in Admiralty after the July 1 march.

“I feel so sorry for my parents. I’m not afraid of being arrested by police but of worrying my parents,” he said.

Chow said the best way to thank his parents is to work for Hong Kong to have a higher degree of democracy.

About 2,000 people took part in the sit-in organized by the federation and Scholarism. Police removed all the protesters before 9am Wednesday.
