Anti-Hamas action may be expanded after teen killings: Israel

Israel has warned that it may expand military action against Hamas in the Gaza Strip in response to the killing of three teenagers whose bodies were found in the West Bank.

Hamas is responsible for kidnapping and slaying the three Israeli teenagers, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a television address Tuesday.

The Israeli military will “widen its offensive” against the Palestinian Islamic movement that rules Gaza “if necessary”, Netanyahu said, according to Bloomberg News.

Hamas hasn’t confirmed or denied involvement.

US President Barack Obama and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon have urged Israel and the Palestinians to exercise restraint as the violence between them threatened to escalate.

Israel “needs to be very careful” not to further inflame tensions, and “should not cast a net that harms innocent Palestinians”, US Deputy National Security Adviser Benjamin Rhodes said in Washington.
