The mind of the counterfeit shopper

The mainland battle against upmarket knockoffs has been long but there are few signs that the genuine articles have gained ground. In fact, the supply chain of fake luxury items, from bags to watches, appears to be more sophisticated and winning over more shoppers — some of whom can afford to do better.

The main reason counterfeits are so popular comes down to the face thing. When out and about with friends or relatives, for example, a replica can give the illusion of success, helping a person fake it until they make it.

The 21st Century Business Herald also reports that some shoppers will now opt for a fake Hermes or Gucci if the item costs about the same as an unbranded bag of similar quality. By this logic, a knockoff is seen as better than no brand at all.

Good replicas are also winning over those who can easily afford the real deal.

“It does not make sense to splash out too much on these premium brands,” one woman told the daily. “A style is trendy only for a season. It’s a big waste if I have to throw it away or give it up after a few months.”

The anonymous style maven said people who know her assume whatever she has is authentic, so why not spend the difference on better wine, good food and overseas trips?

Looks like LV et al can’t lower their hand-stitched flags of protest just yet.
