Academic slams pro-Israel HK Christian group

Hong Kong media is biased against Israel in the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians in Gaza, Apple Daily reported Monday, citing a newly formed Christian advocacy.

The group, consisting of 20 young Christians, gathered outside Admiralty Centre near the central business and financial district on Sunday after failing to hand-deliver a letter to the Israeli consulate.

Its leader, surnamed Tam, said he has 16 reasons Israel has to defend itself from attacks by Hamas but did not elaborate. He said Hong Kong media is going in the “wrong direction” in its coverage of the conflict.

During the assembly, the group was confronted by a small number of students carrying placards opposed to Israel’s bombings in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Lo Lung-kwong, a former professor and director of Chinese University of Hong Kong, criticized the group for mixing the Israeli issue with religion and said Israelis today are nothing like those in the bible.

He said Palestine is weak and ill-equipped to deal with Israeli invaders, and war itself is already a violation of biblical principles.

On July 27, about 300 protesters rallied outside the Israeli mission to demand a halt to the atrocities. They called on Israel to free Gaza and stop the killing of civilians, and accused Israelis of being war criminals, according to news portal inmediahk.
