Beijing has become one of the three finalists for hosting the 2022 Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Monday, Beijing Daily reported.
The other two contenders are Almaty in Kazakhstan and the Norwegian capital Oslo. The decision was made at a meeting held during 7-9 July at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne.
The Chinese capital plans to hold the event together with Zhangjiakou in neighboring Hebei province.
“Beijing and Zhangjiakou will strive to hold a Winter Games that is featured by thrift. If we win the bid, we would try to utilize existing venues as much as possible; there is limited need to build new ones,” Yang Shu’an, deputy head of the General Administration of Sport and chief of China’s bid committee, was quoted as saying.
“Even if there is necessity to build new venues, we would take a mixed approach of building permanent and temporary ones,” the official added.
Beijing is seeking to provide an extended legacy for venues built for the Summer Olympic Games in 2008. It wants to create a winter sports center and use the 2022 games as a catalyst to develop the winter sports and tourism industry.
The host city would be elected at an IOC session to be held in July 2015 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
