Nothing brings people together like a shopping mall and now Dubai, the emirate that brought us the world’s tallest tower, plans to unite consumers from around the globe in a temperature-controlled city.
Its builders, Dubai Holding, have dubbed it Mall of the World and say it will be the biggest shopping center on the planet.
Apart from 100 hotels and serviced-apartment buildings, the sprawling city in the sand will boast theaters, medical tourism facilities and the world’s largest indoor theme park. This in a city that already has indoor skiing, a palm-shaped artificial archipelago and some of the world’s biggest shopping centers.
When it’s done Mall of the World will cover 8 million square feet and bolster the emirate’s ambitions to tap into family and retail tourism. Dubai Holding promises that visitors will be able to spend the week there without ever having to leave or use a car.
“This project complements our plans to transform Dubai into a cultural, tourist and economic hub for the two billion people living in the region around us; and we are determined to achieve our vision,” Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said Saturday.
But at what cost? According to the Associated Press, Dubai Holding gave no details about the expected cost or completion date.
Certainly legions of construction workers from around the world will be needed to erect the shopping Mecca, living away from their homes and communities to build a monument to family tourism. Without these migrants, Dubai’s vision will be just a mirage.
