Professor offers hairy path to extra credits

It could be the ultimate in gender equality or just plain silly. For shock value, we have to ask the parents.

But students at a certain university in Arizona are gamely taking on the challenge — for extra scholastic credit, the men are shaving all body hair from the neck down; the women are letting it grow in their armpits.

The offer is good for one semester and professor Breanne Fahs of the Arizona State University is staking her professional reputation on the success of the experiment turning social norms upside down, according to the Daily Mail.

Fahs, who is director of the Center for Feminist Research on Gender and Sexuality, wants the students to document their experiences in a journal.

She said the experiment helps students analyze social attitudes to gender, with female students facing ridicule for having hairy armpits and the men gaining insight into how much pressure is put on women to stay hair free.

“There’s no better way to learn about societal norms than to violate them and see how people react,” Fahs told the school newspaper.

Many of the participants have described it as a life-changing experience but their parents, apparently, are more shocked than enlightened.

One student said her mother was distraught that she was getting married in her white dress with armpit hair.

As for the men, they’re doing fine with their mothers but they’re worried about what their male friends might say.
