Transformers knocks Avatar from top China box-office spot

Paramount Pictures’ “Transformers: Age of Extinction” has surpassed “Avatar” to top China’s box-office records, grossing US$223 million by Sunday, the New York Times reported Tuesday, citing Chinese movie website Mtime.

That compared with the US$174 million the movie earned in the United States by the end of the July 4 holiday weekend, after its simultaneous premiere in China and the US on June 27, the report said.

Paramount partnered with China Movie Channel, a Chinese production company, to make the movie, shot scenes on the mainland and Hong Kong and gave roles to Chinese actors including Li Bingbing, it said.
