Education authorities in several provinces have prohibited students from inviting their teachers to graduation dinners in a bid to discourage bribery and extravagance, China Daily reported.
The ban was issued in Anhui, Guangdong, Shaanxi and Shandong provinces, the newspaper said, citing a report from the official Xinhua News Agency.
While most parents hold such banquets to celebrate their children’s graduation and thank the teachers, officials have noted that the tradition has become increasingly expensive in recent years, the report said.
Some parents also used the opportunity to receive cash gifts from subordinates, while some teachers also accept money from the parents.
Wang Kaiyu, a sociologist, was quoted as saying that while officials meant well in imposing the ban, most parents hold such banquets simply to thank the teachers and not to bribe them.
