Zeman to take on new Ocean Park role

Ocean Park has appointed Allan Zeman as an honorary adviser to the group overseeing work on the attraction’s new water world, just two weeks after he stepped down as the park’s chairman.

During his three-year advisory term for the Tai Shue Wan Steering Group, Zeman will give input on the water park set to open in 2017, Ocean Park announced Monday.

The announcement is another twist to the saga after Zeman revealed that he was forced out as chairman, with the government deciding not to renew his appointment.

Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has been accused of getting rid of capable people he does not like but Zeman had been careful to say that he does not think the move was motivated by politics.

Zeman was succeeded by former deputy chairman Leo Kung, who said Ocean Park is happy about Zeman’s advisory role. Kung also praised his predecessor for his experience and knowledge of the theme park industry.

The brand new world-class water park, with an estimated budget of HK$2.29 billion (US$295.48 million), will be an all-weather water attraction that melds with the landscape of Tai Shue Wan.

Zeman was Ocean Park’s chairman for 11 years from 2003. Under Zeman’s watch, annual attendance at the park soared from 2.95 million in 2002/03 to 7.73 million in 2012/13.
