Typhoon standby signal No 1 in force

The Hong Kong Observatory has hoisted the standby typhoon signal number one. This means that a tropical cyclone centred within about 800 kilometers of Hong Kong may affect the city.

At 8am, Typhoon Rammasun was about 680 kilometers south-southeast of Hong Kong and forecast to move northwest at about 22 kilometers per hour in the general direction of western Guangdong and Hainan Island.

Rammasun is edging closer to the south China coast. Local winds are expected to strengthen gradually today. Depending on the changes in the movement and intensity of Rammasun, the Observatory will consider raising the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 in the afternoon.
