China has urged the United States not to abuse the global trade system by imposing duties on Chinese goods to protect its own economy, Reuters reported Thursday.
“The misuse by the United States of trade measures to help (their) economy seriously harmed the legal rights and interests of Chinese companies,” Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng was quoted as saying.
China has serious concerns about the issue, and “will not sit by and look on,” Gao said.
Washington needs to ponder whether its actions are violating the WTO rules, the minister said, urging the US to correct its ways.
They “should not become a negative model for breaking the rules”, Gao was quoted as saying in comments carried on the ministry’s website.
“Especially at this time when the global economy is slowly recovering, the US side has an even greater responsibility to uphold the multilateral trade system and the rules, and oppose trade protectionism,” the minister added.
The comments came after a rebuke to Washington by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
WTO judges said on Monday that the US broke rules in imposing hefty duties on Chinese steel products, solar panels and a range of other goods that Washington argues enjoyed government subsidies.
