Top leaders’ visits to Inner Mongolia linked to Zhou graft case

Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, visited the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region between July 18 and 21, the fourth member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau to visit the restive region in the past six months, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Tuesday.

President Xi Jinping also paid a three-day visit to the region in late January, Premier Li Keqiang made two-day tours in March and April, and Wang Qishan, head of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, visited Inner Mongolia on July 3 and 4.

According to the newspaper, the senior officials toured several cities including Huhhot, Ordos, Chifeng, Xilingol League and Hinggan League, almost covering half of the autonomous region.

Some observers say the frequent visits by senior officials to Inner Mongolia suggest that authorities are close to finalizing the corruption case against former security czar Zhou Yongkang. Rumors have it that Zhou is being detained at a military camp in Baotou city in the region.
