Wenzhou Christians clash with police to save cross

Hundreds of Christians clashed with police in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, to save a cross from being torn down from their church, Ming Pao Daily reported Wednesday.

About 600 policemen were sent to Pingyang prefecture on Monday to demolish the structure but encountered stiff resistance from the church members.

Several followers were injured in the violence but there were no reports of arrests.

It was the second time in the past month police had been sent to the area to take down the structure after the city government declared it illegal.

The Christian organization, which was formed by the local government, has already lost its chief priest who recently resigned, the report said.
