After a long wait, Hong Kong got its first encounter with Tesla Motors’ much heralded Model S electric sports cars Wednesday.
A car rental company took delivery of the first three units and these will be followed by five more in August, Ming Pao Daily reported Thursday.
The cars will be rented out to five-star hotels. Also, local actor Alex Fong is said to have received his order.
The high-performance sports car, which costs HK$579,000 (US$74,704), runs 300 kilometers on a 20-minute charge. Fully charged, which takes about 75 minutes, it can cover up to 500 kilometers, about the same distance as a conventional car on a full tank.
However, there are not enough charging stations in Hong Kong. Two superchargers have been set up by Tesla at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in Kowloon district and Hopewell Center in Wanchai.
An engineering expert said Hong Kong needs a unified fast-charging system to serve four different types of electric vehicles made in mainland China, Europe, Japan and the United States, the report said.
