Soldiers punished for shirking training

Shenyang military authorities have disciplined more than 300 soldiers in one brigade for cheating during combat readiness training, People’s Daily reported Sunday.

In all, 319 soldiers from the Shenyang Military Area Command were penalized for failing to complete various exercises.

In one case, three soldiers were punished for abandonding some of the 7.4 kilograms of equipment they were told to take in their packs on a training exercise.

The punishments included dismissal, transfer, promotion suspension and loss of year-end bonus, it said.

Brigade commander Xing Yuanming said some officers had talked the talk but not walked the walk on training, planning the exercises but not carrying them out because they were engaged in unspecified activities that are now banned under an “accountability supervisory system”.

One internet user attracted more than 5,000 likes with the comment: “Who could believe that such a cheating force could protect the country – our homeland?”

China has stepped up military training to improve the ability of officers and soldiers to operate in hostile environments.
