Corruption crackdown shifts to govt ‘training centers’

Government training centers that resemble luxury private clubs have become the new targets of the central government’s crackdown on extravagance as officials shy away from public venues and entertain inhouse, according to an article posted on the website of the nation’s top anti-graft watchdog.

The Communist Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection had ordered various government departments to clamp down on the use of such facilities.

Whistleblowers have revealed that many so-called training centers have been fitted out like luxury hotel suites and boast facilities such as swimming pools, golf courses and bowling centers. Some are also decorated with misappropriated antiques.

The facilities have become more common as intense public pressure against corruption has forced government officials to stop entertaining at fancy restaurants or recreation centers.

“Some officials have used training centers to host banquets for friends, and these training centers have become a hotbed for corruption,” a netizen said.

The centers are funded from government coffers and officials often pocket the income from commercial operations at the facilities, the report said.

At the same time, some government land earmarked for training centers has been used for luxury flats or villas.
