Dozens of civilians were killed or injured in a “terrorist attack” early Monday in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday, citing local police.
A gang armed with knives and axes attacked a police station and government offices in Elixku Township in Shache County, the report said. Some of the attackers later moved on to the nearby Huangdi Township, attacking civilians and smashing vehicles as they passed, it said.
Dozens of Uygur and Han civilians were killed or injured in the incident in Kashgar Prefecture, and police officers at the scene shot dead dozens of members of the mob, according to the report.
Thirty one cars were vandalized, including six which were set on fire, Xinhua said.
Initial investigation showed that it was an “organized and premeditated” terror attack, police were quoted as saying.
