Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead on Monday from an apparent suicide at his home in Northern California, Marin County Sheriff’s Office said. He was 63.
it said the death was a suicide due to asphyxia but the cause of death is still under investigation, Reuters reported.
Last month, the Good Will Hunting actor, who has struggled with addiction in the past, entered a Minnesota rehabilitation center to help him maintain sobriety.
His representatives at the time said Williams was not using drugs or alcohol but had gone to the center to “fine-tune and focus” his sobriety after working a longer-than-usual schedule.
Williams had been battling severe depression, according to CNN, quoting a statement from his representatives.
Marin County deputies responded to an emergency call from Williams’ home at 11:55 a.m.
Williams was pronounced dead at 12:02 p.m., the report said.
He was last seen alive at his home, where he lives with his wife, at about 10 a.m., the sheriff’s statement said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, the sheriff said.
Williams received three Oscar nominations for best actor and went on to win best supporting actor for his performance in the 1997 drama Good Will Hunting.
