Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos has been killed in a plane crash weeks before the most hotly contested national election in decades, the Financial Times reported Thursday.
Campos and seven others were killed when their private jet crashed in bad weather in the coastal city of Santos on Wednesday.
Campos’s running mate, Marina Silva, was not on board the aircraft.
Opinion polls show Campos was the third strongest presidential candidate in the run-up to the October election and analysts had expected the business-friendly leftist to gain more support as his official television campaign got under way.
President Dilma Rousseff is the favourite to win despite her waning popularity among investors who dislike her party’s interventionist economic policies.
Silva is widely expected to take Campos’s place, the report said.
