India on Monday abruptly cancelled talks with Pakistan scheduled for next week, responding angrily to what it described as Islamabad’s interference in India’s internal affairs.
Officials berated Pakistan after its top diplomat in New Delhi met with separatist leaders from Kashmir in defiance of an Indian warning, Agence France-Presse reported.
The meeting between the Pakistani envoy and Kashmiri separatist leaders has undermined efforts by the new Indian government to engage with Islamabad, the Indian foreign ministry said.
Pakistan said the cancellation of talks was a “setback” for relations between the neighbors.
Pakistan’s foreign office described meetings with pro-independence leaders as a “longstanding practice” ahead of talks with India, held “to facilitate meaningful discussions”.
“The Indian decision is a setback to the efforts by our leadership to promote good neighborly relations with India,” the foreign office was quoted as saying in a statement.
