Xi marks Deng birthday with vow to pursue doctrine

President Xi Jinping marked the 110th anniversary of the birth of Deng Xiaoping by vowing to uphold socialism with Chinese characteristics, state news agency Xinhua reported Wednesday.

Xi addressed a forum ahead of Deng’s birthday on Friday in which he expounded on the political and theoretical legacy of Deng’s historic doctrine.

Also, Xi pledged to pursue China’s independent “path, theory and system”, the report said.

Socialism with Chinese characteristics fits China’s reality and meets the needs of the times, which is why it works, he said.

Xi said the independent path, theory and system are key to China’s sovereignty, dignity and self-esteem.

Senior leaders Li Keqiang, Zhang Dejiang, Yu Zhengsheng, Wang Qishan and Zhang Gaoli attended the event.

Xi described Deng as a great Marxist, revolutionary, statesman, military leader and diplomat and “the chief architect of China’s socialist reform and opening-up and modernization”.

Deng was born on Aug. 22, 1904 in southwest China’s Sichuan province.
