Govt official sacked over hotel demolition

A local official in eastern China’s Anhui province has been removed from his position after he ordered the demolition of a five-star hotel, apparently for personal reasons, Ecns.cn, the official English-language website of China News Service, reported.

Fang Xiping, municipal party secretary of Anhui’s Huaian city, was placed under investigation for severe discipline violations, the report said, adding that the case could be linked to the demolition of the city’s only five-star hotel, which was still under construction, in March.

The structure, whose construction reached the 10th-floor level before it was levelled, was intended to be a city landmark for entertainment, shopping, sports and conventions. Some 200 million yuan (US$32 million) had already been invested in the project.

It’s unclear why Fang decided to stop the construction, but some sources said the official apparently didn’t like the building, which was to the south of his office and impeded positive fung shui.

Other sources said Fang was jealous because it was initiated by the previous administration and wouldn’t boost his resume.

The local government has declined to comment. Earlier, it said investors had pulled out of the project, but this was refuted by a Xiamen property company that had a 10 million yuan stake in the project, the report said.
