A total of 150 new cases of HIV infection were reported in Hong Kong in the second quarter, Ming Pao Daily reported on Wednesday, citing the Center for Health Protection.
For the full year, the number of HIV cases is expected to surpass 600, a historical high, according to CHP consultant Wong Ka-hing.
Sexual transmission remained the major mode of HIV transmission in the city, accounting for 70.7 percent, according to the center.
Almost half of the 150 cases acquired the infection through homosexual or bisexual contact, while 82.7 percent were males, the report said. Two cases was infected through drug injection, one through blood or blood-product transfusion outside Hong Kong.
Hong Kong AIDS Foundation has launched an appointment program for HIV tests through the smartphone app Line. From March 2013 to April this year, more than 430 people have sought appointment for HIV testing.
