It is assumed that a top commercial model is earning a lot and can afford to buy a decent flat, but Malaysian-American model Mandy Lieu still managed to raise not a few eyebrows recently when it was reported that she had acquired a unit at Swire Properties’ Argenta for HK$91 million.
The property is one of the 30 exclusive units at 63 Seymour Road in Mid-Levels West. Measuring 2,182 sq. ft., it is priced at HK$41,800 per square foot.
Lieu is no stranger to the real estate business. A decade ago, she did TV and print ads for Henderson Land’s Grand Promenade and later for its Grand Waterfront project. She has also pitched for Wharf T&T, SK2, Adidas and many other prestigious brands in Hong Kong and elsewhere.
But wags figure that even if she did a product endorsement every week, she would not be able to afford her dream nest. So how was she able to foot the hair-raising bill?
The answer in one word: romance.
Just after she paid the down payment for the luxury flat a month ago, Lieu’s paparazzi-taken picture was splashed on the Next Magazine cover with Macau tycoon Chau Cheok-wa, chairman of the property developer Sun Century Group and online games and mineral exploration group Sun International Resources.
But just as the romance came to light, prospects of it blossoming into something more serious dimmed as rumors surfaced that Chau did not want the media spotlight and decided to dump Lieu.
And that leads to the next question: Can Lieu still hold on to her Argenta unit? October, said to be the deadline for her to complete the transaction, is fast approaching.
